a giveaway and an annoucement!

i was so excited about all the positive and sweet feedback you gave me on these:

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

thank you!

after some convincing and encouraging from the hubs and some friends (including many of your comments), i've decided to open up an etsy shop to sell these name plaques/paintings. yay!

am i crazy for doing this while we're (most likely) a few weeks away from a travel call? probably! :)

i'm still in the process of setting things up over at my etsy shop, so i'll share the link once everything is up and running. but, in the meantime, to get the word out and build my portfolio, i'm doing a giveaway!

two commenters will be chosen randomly and i'll be giving away one custom canvas name painting and one custom wooden name plaque.

to enter, answer this question:

what style or trend did you try (or faithfully follow) that you most regret?

(this really has nothing to do with the giveaway; i just need something to make me laugh while i'm home sick today)

me? the nasty big wave bangs of the late eighties/early nineties:
i am sad to say that i probably contributed a lot to the hole in ozone layer with all the hairspray i used in middle school. sad. and i'm SO not showing an actual picture of me with that hair!

this giveaway is open to anyone and everyone, so invite your friends to come and play, too! oh, and if you win, you aren't limited to names only on the signs -- we can do a family name, a teacher name for a classroom, a favorite quote, a house number, etc. :) two winners will be announced on tuesday, november 2!

good luck!

  1. Um, I think you HAVE to post a picture of you with those bangs. Come on...!
Hm, my worst trend follow would have to be a tie between tight-rolling my jeans and wearing ridiculous bolo ties! Seriously? We thought this looked good?!

  2. Has to be be the big frizzy perm with HUGE bangs for me too while wearing out of this world shoulder pads.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I had a TIGHT perm on top of my already curly hair. My hair was cut short so I looked like a creepy version of little orphan Annie! Good luck with your Etsy shop!

  4. I would have to say.....tight rolling my jeans {hangs head in shame}

    ReplyDelete
  5. The 'pegged' jeans, for sure, as well as rolling my short-sleeve shirt sleeves up, too...ugh, what we were thinking?! (obviously, we weren't!)

  6. Congrats on the Etsy shop! How exciting! I was going to say the bangs as well, or tight rolling my jeans. Hope you feel better soon!

  7. Congrats on the Etsy shop - that's awesome! I wish I was crafty, I am sooo not. As far as the 80's/90's - with the naturally curly hair, the big bangs/hair would have to be #1 but since that is "taken", I'll go for the ultra-fabulous. . . LEG WARMERS!!!

  8. I'm so happy you are doing an etsy shop! Looking forward to ordering some name signs for the boys!
I had a tight perm with huge bangs to go along with my pegged jeans! What was I thinking??? :)

  9. Yay for the Etsy shop!! I think it's wonderful that you are starting a new endeavor!
I will answer your question with a link to an old blog post of mine. You wanna see some bad hair? Take a peek, my friend. :)

  10. Congratulations on starting an Etsy shop!!! How exciting! I had the big bangs and horrible perm - but I also had made a huge mistake lighten my hair (it was super trendy when Wham & Duran Duran were HUGE) in eighth grade with "Sun-In" - it turned my hair ORANGE! It took over a year to get back to my normal color:-(

  11. Congrats!
OK, the big bangs were a problem. I got up early to get the hair dryer out to make them stand up straight and then hairspray them. Then gently curl them back a tiny bit. Oh, what a nightmare. Trying to burn all middle school pictures!

Also - I rolled my jeans. :) I'm so excited for your shop. Hoping to win one, then I'll go buy the other...and hopefully soon we'll have a 3rd to buy.

Hoping to hear about EP approval soon - how long does that usually take?

  12. Yay for your etsy shop - that is awesome!

I had BIG bangs. And wore a fanny pack on field trips. And rocked stirrup pants with slouchy socks. :-)

  13. I LOVE give-aways and your signs, so I have to enter. My fashion faux pas - wearing my jeans pegged with my socks pulled up over them so that you couldn't tell that my jeans were way too short. Of course, it was totally obvious that they were too short. So glad they now make jeans in long lengths. If that's not bad enough, I also thought I was really cool in the late 80's with my short shorts, black tights and Doc Martins. So glad we didn't have camera phones and facebook back then.

  14. Congrats on the Etsy Shop! I can't wait to see what you ahve to sell! I have to say for me the pegged jeans and short shorts were my cool look. I told myself I would never wear skinny jeans again, but lo and behold, with the 80's coming back, I did give in and buy a pair. But they are not pegged!

  15. You will do very well on Etsy! Congratulations!!

My big looks was spiked hair, white bangs, and black eye-liner. Anyone remember melting the eye liner with a lighter so it went on heavier? Oh yeah. I was HOT!

  16. How cool!
First off... I am so excited for you to be going to Korea.
I guess the thing I followed was having parachute pants and sebbagos. (Probably spelled those wrong!!) Oh.. seeing as I graduated in 88... I had BIG HAIR too.

  17. Your awesome Grace. You need something to occupy you the next couple of weeks. Believe me!!! I did wear fanny packs and I cut my jeans into shorts. You know the shorts with all the strings coming out of them :)

  18. go you! great idea to set up an etsy shop! hope it goes well.

i was a teenager in the late nineties so i thought i was grungy when i found these crazy stilt-high platform sandals that were bright blue and had brown and yellow stripes (don't ask). the worst part is that i wore these SANDALs with tall brown socks, that i'm sure were my dad's nasty office ones. i thought i was starting a trend.

  19. Yay for the etsy shop! I can't wait to see it. Like everyone else it seems, I tried to do the big bangs and spiral perm thing; unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), I have thin, fine hair, so it never worked all that well. So I just looked like I was desperately trying with no success. Pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think it's fantastic that you are opening an etsy shop!!! It's an exciting step and I wish you lots of luck!

As for what horrible trend I followed. Oy, there were a few. I definitely had the big bangs, tight rolled jeans and slap bracelets (remember those?).

    ReplyDelete
  21. What!? I am SO FREAKING EXCITED FOR YOU!!! I can't wait until you are up and running so I can "fave" you. And post about it of course! ;-)

OK, Jersey Girl... I kinda think it was a requirement for you to wear your hair that way. No? Gosh, I've been using that excuse for years... please don't crush me. I'd have to say the whole Jersey Girl package is what I regret. Bangs hairsprayed sky high, doubled up polo shirts with the collars up thank-you-very-much, rolled jeans with multiple colored slouchy socks and high-top keds to round out the look. Oh, and big hoop earrings with multiple necklaces, natch.

  22. Congrats on setting up shop. That is super exciting, and your designs are so cute.

I never win anything, but here is goes...

The 80's were very rough for me! My mom would crimp my hair before every school picture. It took over an hour! Ugh! Plus, I loved wearing huge tee shirts that had been puffy painted by me along with leggings with LA Gear hightops. Gotta love it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Congrats! That's awesome.
Well, I'm a bit older than you, but the one I most regret is the 'grunge' look from the early 90's in college...big flannel shirts and baggy jeans? Not a good look. Though those shirts seem to be coming back in a more flattering cut.

  24. This is so easy:

Blue eyeliner with blue eye shadow and blue mascara.

The name plaques are amazing! I love that you're selling them on etsy, and please please post the link when it's up so we can tell all our friends!!

  25. First guy to make an entry:

-flat fronted slim cut khakis. pleated khakis are out, and men are supposed to wear flat front, slim cut pants now...except all the bending over, crouching, kneeling that i've been doing in my classroom has started to rip a hole in my crotch. it sucks.

if i win, i'm going to ask for a name plate for my classroom. i still have kids visit my room and ask "are you the replacement for Mrs. Ericson?"

  26. I really enjoy your blog and can't wait to follow along as you bring your baby home. It's an incredible experience that I know well. Our little D has been home from Korea for 2 years in January, and he is amazing. Anyways, one awful fashion trend I stuck to for too long was the bangs "poof". It took forever to do each morning and I wasted too many hour of my life trying to make it look perfect. All I can say is "ugh"...glad I don't have too many photos of that awkwardness!

    ReplyDelete
  27. oh my gosh...yay!! i'm so happy you are opening an etsy shop!! if you don't have anyone who has one and have questions..please feel free to ask me!! oh and boo to you being sick!! so sorry!! oh and another bigger BOOOOOOO to your facebook post!!
the trend that i regret the most is let's see..stir up pants...tight rolled jeans..stinky perms but the worst was when i used to blow dry my bangs straight up..seriously my hair looked like i copied something about mary's hair. it was sad.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Those name plaques are so cute! I'd have to say that I was forever trying to perm my very thick wavy hair. Looked like a poodle for a while!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Luv the cute name plaques/canvases...I love anything with a name or monogram on it! It truly is an obsession! I will have to go with the infamous perm, and I see I am not alone :) I talked my mom into perming my hair when I was about 7, and it lasted until I was about 14!!! Definitely not using my brain on that one.

  30. Gauchos! Bad, bad, idea. I've grown and learned from my mistakes. And hooray for you for opening an Etsy shop!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Congrats on opening your etsy shop! That is so great! And yes, I'm not gonna lie...you are a little crazy!! lol...just sayin'....you'll see...BUT, it's still so great and you are super talented!

Ummm, how did you get my junior high picture?!? I thought I had that in deep, deep hiding. Yes, I had that EXACT hairstyle for way too long! Yep, me and aqua net, we had a very close relationship. It was bad. Real bad.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Congrats on the etsy shop - I think that's great!

Oh so many fashion-disasters...i had the big bangs & the tight-rolled jeans like so many others...though I think my absolute worst choice was using Sun-Light in my hair 3 summers in a row (even though each time my hair ended up orange).

    ReplyDelete
  33. Don't tell anybody, but I was in to Mill Vanilli as a freshman in highschool. We all know how that turned out.

Congrats on your decision to open up shop on etsy! I'm sure you'll do great; you are very talented and have a good eye. Be sure to post the link when you're up and running!

  34. I love that you are doing these! I think they're fabulous.

Not so fabulous - my grunge/ hippie look in the 90's. The Doc Martens in the middle of summer, the baggy clothes, the green hair! And my parents freaked after I got my nose pierced, so I got an addittional FAKE nose ring to wear.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't regret anything!!! Bring back the 80's please. leg warmers, feathered bangs, friendship pins, flourescent clothes, acid wash, fringe, the whole nine!!! I thought the 80's were threatening to come back last year but it did not last long enough...

  38. Grace, this post totally rocks.

I think Hyper Color (that stuff will make a comeback, just watch!), "Get Used" jeans (remember those things with all of the patches...what were we thinking?) and acid washed jeans (tried making my own one time...not kidding...straight bleach, baby!)were some of my faves......the 80's rocked.

I rocked all of the other trends on here as well. Darn, should have taken out stock in Aqua Net before the 80's rolled around!

    Thanks for the laughs!

  39. Congrats on the Etsy shop. I can't wait to check it out!

As for the trends...oh, my! You're going to be sorry you ever asked about that! From head to toe, I think I *tried* to rock them all: banana clips, big bangs, twist beads, t-shirt clip, tight-rolled jeans, slouch socks, the list could go on. Seriously? Why did my mom ever let me leave the house looking that way!!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Just stopping by for ICLW - hi! Your plaques are gorgeous, and so is your little boy! I'm sorry you've had to wait so long to bring him home...

    ReplyDelete
  41. This is a GREAT idea Grace! I love your plaques and will likely be placing an order for the argyle one - love it!

Yes, I *tried* to rock many of the trends already mentioned here (namely the peg legged jeans) but here's one that I don't think was mentioned and I DID rock this one - jelly shoes in hot pink. Oh yeah.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Good luck with your shop! Love Etsy! I';; add you as a favourite :)
I've had quite a few horrible perms in my past... yikes.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Congratulations on opening your Etsy shop. Your plaques are gorgeous!

Okay, I had all of the above. Tight rolled jeans, high bangs, poodle perm, and jelly shoes. But I have my mom to thank for the worst look of my life. When I was in 4th grade she cut bangs all around my face. Then she would curl them under, towards my face. I resembled a hairsprayed lion. Horrible! And that look lasted until 6th grade. Yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Congrats on your Etsy shop! Can't wait to see it! I was also a fan of the big bangs, as well as the hairspray encrusted "wings" on each side of my head. But I think my most memorable look would have to be my Michael Jackson perm, or any perm for that matter, which is probably not the best look for Asian women...

    ReplyDelete
  45. I was overall crazy in early highschool. I had so many pairs. I kinda wish they would come back...so comfy! Good luck with the Etsy shop!

    ReplyDelete
  46. ooh. i'm so blessed to have received one early in your career. =) (we still have yet to make david's and now have to add one more!) ahhhhhh! maybe i'll just wait for you to open your etsy store. . . sigh.

  47. Overalls, socks with pumps, nasty perm... I even cut my hair all punk and asymmetrical. One side of my head was almost shaved. Think Boy George meets Madonna. Too bad I don't have pictures. My parents stopped taking them. Maybe this was a phase they didn't want to remember. Seriously - you look at our family albums and I'm mising! Nothing there from ages 14 through 17. It's like I turned 14 and they sent me away and came back for my senior prom... :o| Congratulations on your Etsy shop. This is so exciting! I faithfully follow your blog but never comment as its hard to do it from my phone. (I'm doing it now - anything for a giveaway! LOL) I only have time to read blogs at bedtime. My blog has spiderwebs and not because it was halloween... When your baby comes home you'll know what I mean... So glad you're almost there!

  48. This is my first post here, although I've been reading for a while now. Congrats on your esty shop and the EP!! I've been following your blog because we are also Korean-Americans trying to adopt.

To answer the question (for the chance to win):
    SHOULDER PADS
I have a small frame. So, they really made me look like a football player. I can't believe I thought I looked cool in an oversize blazer with the shoulder pads on top of a dress.

    ReplyDelete
  49. the perm!. not a good look for me.
congrats on your etsy shop, i hope i win!

  50. Congrats and best wishes on your new etsy shop!

I am sad to say I also had the wave thing happening with my hair (and unfortunately the pictures to prove it).

why, hello there! do you have something to say? 'cause i'd so love to hear it!
