running through my head...

admittedly, there are times when i am complete cheeseball in my music tastes. case in point? one of my favorite christmas songs is mariah carey's "all i want for christmas". i know, it's really cheesy, but there is something about it that gets me boppin' and makes me want to unleash my inner diva.

the other day, i was driving, listening to the all-christmas-music station and this song came on. and i started crying. yes, friends, ugly crying. really, the crying part was not terribly surprising, as spontaneous tears have been popping up here and there quite a bit lately. but what *was* surprising was that it was the lyrics that really got me.

i know, right? a mariah carey song made me cry. (okay, confession: in middle school, "hero" would regularly make me cry, especially after the first world trade center bombing when the song was used for all the rescue worker montages.)

but, these lyrics are ones that really echo what's in my heart...and for your listening pleasure as you scroll through the cry-inducing lyrics, my favorite version of this song, from "love actually."

:

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There's just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is...
You

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There's just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need to hang my stocking
There upon the fireplace
Santa Claus won't make me happy
With a toy on Christmas day
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you
You baby

I won't ask for much this Christmas
I don't even wish for snow
I'm just gonna keep on waiting
Underneath the mistletoe
I won't make a list and send it
To the North Pole for Saint Nick
I won't even stay awake to
Hear those magic reindeers click
'Cause I just want you here tonight
Holding on to me so tight
What more can I do
Baby all I want for Christmas is you
Ooh baby
All the lights are shining
So brightly everywhere
And the sound of children's
Laughter fills the air
And everyone is singing
I hear those sleigh bells ringing
Santa won't you bring me the one I really need
Won't you please bring my baby to me...

Oh I don't want a lot for Christmas
This is all I'm asking for
I just want to see my baby
Standing right outside my door
Oh I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Baby all I want for Christmas is...
You

All I want for Christmas is you... baby

see what i mean? it's everything i'm thinking and wishing right now...well, maybe not the "i just want to see my baby standing right outside my door" part. it would be a bit creepy to find a 15 month-old choi boy suddenly standing outside my door. i mean, i would love it, but it would be weird.

goodness, this child needs to come home! pretty soon, it'll be jonas brothers and justin bieber songs that will be making me cry!

  4. actually, grace, I'm not surprised at all, seeing as I heard this song in the car the other day and thought of you. It is an upbeat song, but I thought about my waiting mama friends and how for all of you it really means your "baby" babies and not your "lov-ah" babies....I hope you get what you want for Christmas.

  6. I've been doing a lot of spontaneous crying too. The other day while dusting, "I'll be home for Christmas" brought me to my knees. At this point, I've banned Christmas music from my car for the whole safety concern.... :( I'm so sorry that you haven't heard an update. I'm praying that Choi boy is home for Christmas!

  13. first of all, i LOVE that song too! ( and Love Actually is a total favorite around here for both me and glenn. :)
these lyrics are perfect for what you are feeling right now. and i totally get the whole crying to songs. I do it all the time....whether i'm happy or sad. it's a good release to let go of all of those emotions for a few minutes and just sob away while you sing!

and want to hear something totally embarrassing? two things actually.....1) i just watched the movie "Elf" with Noah and started crying when Zooey Deschanel's character started singing "Santa Claus is coming to town." I'm totally blaming it on my PMS. ;) and 2) i just looked up an old video of a song that i gave to my dad one father's day. Have you ever heard the song "Kind and Generous" by Natalie Merchant? well, i just sat here and sobbed while watching the video on youtube. dang, it gets me every time.
in case you want to give it a watch, it's such a beautiful song....

  15. So fitting... I found that a lot of "love" songs suited the adoption journey when we were there.
Hang in there, mama. I know that every one of us mamas is willing that boy into your arms SOON.
