a clarification.

i'm glad piper made you laugh. :) i've long since realized that that is piper's role in our lives. some dogs were born to comfort, others to lead, still others to be heroes. well, our dog was born to be laughed at. oh, we totally love her to bits, but we spend a lot of time laughing at her. not with her. at her. she doesn't seem to mind, though.

i do have to clarify, for the sake of piper's dignity and pride, that she is not a lab. not a full labrador retriever anyway. we adopted from an awesome local rescue 3 years ago when she was about 10 weeks old. we were told that she was almost certainly part black lab, and most likely also beagle or some sort of hound. after learning more of what the beagle is like (read: crazy independent with minds of their own), we think that's probably what she's mixed with.

here are some pics of her non-black-lab traits:
Photobucket
if you look closely, she has two different colored eyes. her right eye is the normal brown color of black labs. her left one is the golden-y/hazel color of beagle eyes, and it also has that weird third eyelid. i call that one her edward cullen eye.

lab eye.

she also has a white beard and a white strip on her neck:

when we were deciding what to name her, peter kept coming back this white part and wanted to name her oreo or, wait for it:

CREST.
as in CREST WHITE STRIPS.

i know, right?

whatever she is, we love her...and here's my one plug: adopt a pet! :)

okay, that's all.

i promise, no more gratuitous pics of piper.

at least not this month. ;)

  1. Whatever she is, she is just the cutest!!!! I have to say, I think she is lab/hound with those long, gangly (adorable!) legs of hers and her long neck! My in-law's (purebreed) black lab plays 'fetch' the exact same way. :o)

  2. that first picture made me laugh out loud! she is so cute! i know that look all to well! both of our dogs are adopted..one from farm and the other from a rescue group. they are the best pets. i often tell my husband that i never thought i'd love my dogs as much as i do. oh and we laugh at our dogs a lot. life wouldn't be the same without them.

  4. Oh Piper, you could be part bear and I still would think you were the cutest thing ever! Now, is there a treat involved in that first photo?! Cause it kinda looks like you are saying "give it to me already!" with that expression...

Our dog Roxy is adopted too... and while she's purebred, she certainly has her moments that I wonder...

Just remember, you're perfect Piper! (Even if we do laugh a little... or a lot...)

  5. Whatever you are Piper, you sure are adorable! And how cool are her eyes?!! ( i'm giggling at the name Crest. very funny. )

Simon is also a rescue pup. Supposedly part wire fox terrier and we have no idea what else. ( I just say cute. :) And actually, Tuesday will be 2 years that Simon will be with us! ( yep, his family day!! :)

ohhh, and thanks for still following my blog! I wish I knew how to make it show up in your reader but I'm not the most computer savvy. ( and, uh, I don't know what a reader is. :)

  6. i'm cracking up that you took all these close up shots of Piper! she's a good sport. we spend most of our days laughing at our dog - or getting mad at her. she's gotten a bit more ornery in her older age. she counter surfs - in front of us. she used to only do it when we weren't in the room. sigh. we love her though!

  7. Nebbie isn't full black lab either. We think he is mixed with border collie due to the white on his belly and longer hair on his legs and his too-tiny-for-his-body head.

  9. Aww, she looks so sweet. Strange about the eyes, that they are so different. When we are ready for a dog (and I tell Paul this is when I ask for baby #3), we so want to local rescue/shelter as well. I don't want a puppy and I want to have a good idea of the personality is. I'm so curious to see how your doggie does with C.

  10. What a good girl! She's gorgeous.
I'm all about shelter animals too. Our cat was from a shelter. And my aunt worked at the Anti-Cruelty Society here in Chicago for years and years..now an animal control officer. So...we understand that rescue animals are the best :)

  11. Oh, Piper, look at your eyes! Amazing. I laughed at the Edward Cullen one :) Al is a rescue dog, too, and awesome. They may be more quirky, those rescue dogs but more lovable, I think. We have no idea what Al is but we think his mix somehow involves Alaskan malamute, lab, and shepherd ... but everyone who meets him has a different opinion :) The weirdest idea (which may be right!) is Hungarian Kuvosck (sp??)

  12. Piper is a beautiful dog! Love her eyes (I am assuming her based on the name but if I am wrong, please accept my apology Piper!) Our dog is also adopted and we only know half of her breed, Terrier. We are always trying to figure out the other half:-)
